About “Summer of Service” (SOS) Program
“Summer of Service” (SOS) Program is a values formation program through voluntary work exposure designed for Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) High School Students. The acronym “SOS” stands for “Summer of Service” and is jointly sponsored by the SHS-AdC’s Administration, the SHS Alumni Association, and some service companies operating in Cebu. This program runs within a 4-week period during the summer break.

What are the objectives of the program?
SOS Program aims to inculcate the following in the student-volunteers:
The value of hard work before pleasure or comfort; saving one’s resources for the future; teamwork; social consciousness; a sense of mission; and to create a sense of pride in being able to help the less fortunate in our society through a scholarship fund generated from the fruits of the volunteer’s labor.

How does Project SOS work?
The basic idea of SOS Program is to encourage incoming Grade 10 and incoming Grade 12 students to volunteer and work as ordinary employees in service outlets or stores. Student volunteers are also given remuneration based on the current minimum wage. The student-volunteers report to work for 4 hours from Mondays to Fridays during dayshifts only.

What happens to the earnings of the student volunteers?
The student-volunteers will keep 50% of their earnings (or voluntarily contribute it.) while the other 50% of their income is contributed to a scholarship fund.

Who are the beneficiaries of the fund?
Poor but academically gifted students studying in a public school will be the beneficiaries of the scholarship fund. These students will receive support until they graduate from grade school. The students need to maintain a specified grade for them to remain in the scholarship program.

What are the benefits of the program?

A. As far as the proponents are concerned, especially on the side of the Alumni of the school, the program will give them the chance to form SHS-AdC students into mature Christians.

B. As participants in the program, the volunteers can expect the following benefits:

     – Participate in an intensive team building session given only to participants of the program.

     – The chance to experience the world of work and to enjoy one’s fruit of labor.

     – The volunteer can expect remuneration.

     – The chance to help send to school our less fortunate brothers through scholarship funds.

C. As one community, the SHS-AdC Administrators, the Alumni and the students would be able to help provide a better future for the recipient of the scholarship funds.

How does one join the program?
Any 15-year-old SHS-AdC student can approach the Campus Ministry and Social involvement Office (CMSIOO) to get the application form for the program. All submitted application forms will be submitted to a rigorous screening. Application runs from March 20, 2024 to April 8, 2024.
