Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu Presents The Original Musical, KILAT: Dulang Musikal

Experience the Heroism of Leon Kilat Brought to Life with Unforgettable Performances

[MANDAUE CITY, March 19, 2024] – Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu is thrilled to announce its highly anticipated original musical production, “KILAT: Dulang Musikal”. At a press conference on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Rizal Memorial Library and Museum in Osmeña Blvd, Cebu City, details of this remarkable production were unveiled. In an era marked by globalization and cultural homogenization, echoing recent global discussions on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and national identities, celebrating local traditions and stories like Leon Kilat, becomes increasingly vital.

KILAT: Dulang Musikal is a portrayal of the life, leadership, and heroism of Pantaleon Villegas, famously known as Leon Kilat. This musical play vividly portrays the humane characteristics that defined Leon Kilat’s persona, showcasing his invincible spirit and persistent efforts in leading the Cebu chapter of the Katipunan during the quest for Philippine independence.

Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu has previously showcased numerous stage productions. However, according to Mr. Anthony Hejie Suralta, the producer, “Kilat: Dulang Musikal holds a special significance as it authentically reflects our school community. This distinction stems from the involvement of individuals from our school as the director, playwright, actors, and musical directors, making it a truly homegrown endeavor.” The school is enthusiastically promoting this stage play primarily due to its deep-rooted cultural significance. “Understanding Kilat’s cultural importance, we aspire for our students and audience to appreciate his legacy and embrace it as a beacon of hope,” he added.

One captivating aspect of this play is that its music comprises original student compositions. “Kilat is my debut in theater production, and the most fulfilling aspect is creating and enhancing the atmosphere for each scene. Through the music, I aim for the audience to experience the scene deeply, sometimes feeling its weight, and other times, light and dance-like throughout their entire body,” expressed Alexa Andrea Yap, the musical director. “I want the audience to feel fully immersed in the play,” she concluded.

Mr. Orland James Romarate, designated in-charge of the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission Office (CHAO), expressed his appreciation of the timing of the production, which coincides perfectly with the conclusion of the commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the Battle of Tres de Abril. “This initiative raises awareness about the battle’s significance, which is often overlooked, with many simply recognizing Tres de Abril as the name of a street,” he said. “Staging this production ignites public interest in exploring our local history more deeply.”

Recognizing the profound historical significance and cultural relevance of this production to the local heritage of Cebu, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu has joined hands with key local government units, including Cebu City, the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAO), the City of Carcar, and Mandaue City. FADI, Xhimera, and Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc., are some of the private institutions that sponsored the musical. Their steadfast support has played an indispensable role in realizing and bringing this production to fruition.

Kilat: Dulang Musikal will be staged at the Virginia Chiongbian Theater of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu from April 4-6, 2024, with matinee shows at 9:30 am and 1:45 pm, and gala shows at 5:30 pm.
