Preschoolers Honor Everyday Heroes in Community Helpers’ Week

By: Glena del Castillo (GS Faculty)

This year, the Early Education Unit’s Community Helpers’ Week took a heartfelt turn as our preschoolers celebrated with genuine simplicity and gratitude. Unlike previous years, when children paraded in colorful costumes representing their favorite community helpers, the focus shifted to honoring the true heroes—those who selflessly served our community during the recent earthquake and Typhoon Tino that impacted Cebu. Through thoughtful activities and reflections, our young learners expressed their appreciation for these everyday heroes who embody courage and care in times of need.

Rescuers, doctors, government officials, local government units, reporters, and clearing operation teams were recognized for their courage and dedication. To show gratitude, each class created a paper medal during their Art session. The medals showcased images of community helpers that the children colored with great care. These completed artworks were proudly exhibited on the bulletin board of the Early Education lobby, creating a heartfelt collective tribute to the dedicated individuals who generously gave their time and strength to serve others.

Inside the classrooms, teachers guided meaningful discussions about the importance of these community helpers and how their service made a difference in the lives of many. The children learned that true community service means giving without counting the cost, echoing the teachings of Jesus about compassion and selflessness.

The week concluded with each class taking photos beside their displayed medals, capturing the spirit of gratitude and resilience. Though simple, the celebration imparted lasting lessons about helping, giving, and becoming men and women for others—values that shine even brighter in times of adversity.
