A Hearter in the Vatican

A Hearter in the Vatican

  • Msgr. Jan Thomas Limchua (’01) appointed to Vatican Post
  • Official at the Section for the Relations with States of the Holy See

No. That’s not the title of the latest bestseller novel out in bookstores. This is non-fiction, a true story. There’s a Hearter in the Vatican in the name of Msgr. Jan Thomas Limchua of the Sacred Heart School for Boys Batch 2001.

With the consent of His Holiness Pope Francis, Msgr. Limchua was appointed as an official of the Section for the Relations with States of the Holy See by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, His Eminence Pietro Cardinal Parolin. This section or department is equivalent to a Department of Foreign Affairs of a country, and manages the international relations between the Vatican and the different countries.

The ever humble Msgr. Limchua, who is a priest from the Archdiocese of Cebu, recognized the importance of his new post and in turn asked for prayers. “I’m humbled but at the same time I know of the heavy responsibilities that awaits me, in the service of the Holy Father and of the Universal Church. I count on your prayers and support as I start this new phase of my mission for the Holy See,” he said.

For his part, SHS-Ateneo President Fr. Manny Uy SJ was elated at the news about this latest post for Msgr. Limchua. “We are consoled and edified that an alumnus of ours is missioned to a vital ministry in the Church. It is inspiring that among our distinguished alumni is a priest serving our Mother Church. We assure Msgr. Jan of our prayers and support.” Fr. Manny said.

Msgr. Limchua, who visits the school every time he comes to Cebu, finished his theological studies at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Navarre in Pamplona, Spain. He then earned his doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. He underwent his diplomatic formation at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the Diplomatic school of the Holy See. He entered the Diplomatic Service on July 1, 2014, and served in the countries of Benin and Togo from 2014 to 2016. He has been based in Egypt since 2016 and will move to Rome for his new post in September.

The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu community is one in praying for and supporting Msgr. Jan Thomas Limchua.
