Two exceptional students from Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu, Renz Rudolf Landicho and Daxx Pharell Llorente have made history as the first-ever recipients of the John L. Ocampo Endowed Scholarship, a prestigious and life-changing opportunity that will fully fund their undergraduate education in Electrical Engineering at Santa Clara University (SCU) in California, USA.
Established in 2024, the John L. Ocampo Endowed Scholarship is designed to support academically strong yet financially challenged Filipino students in pursuing an education that would otherwise be beyond their reach. The donor envisions this scholarship as a means to uplift deserving scholars, enabling them to achieve a life of accomplishment, fulfillment, and service to the common good.
Following a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, the two Ateneo Hearter scholars stood out for their academic performance, unwavering discipline, and deep commitment to their families and communities. Their dedication was recognized by an esteemed panel of interviewers, including Santa Clara University President Dr. Julie Sullivan, Fr. Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator, S.J., (Dean of the Santa Clara University Jesuit School of Theology), Kate Moody (Associate Director, University Event Planning Officer)and Nancy Trish Calderon (Senior Associate Vice President – Principal Gifts and Development), all of whom expressed admiration for the scholars’ hard work and perseverance.
The John L. Ocampo Endowed Scholarship is an all-inclusive grant that covers tuition, fees, room and board, books, and even a $500 monthly stipend. Additionally, the scholarship provides three round-trip airfare tickets per year, allowing the scholars to travel between the Philippines and the U.S. for the start of the school year in September, the Christmas holidays, and the end of the academic term. With no out-of-pocket costs required, the scholarship ensures full financial support throughout their four-year undergraduate journey, as long as the students remain in good academic standing in the Electrical Engineering program at SCU.
This extraordinary opportunity marks a new chapter for the scholars, offering them access to world-class education and resources that will shape their futures. The scholarship committee hopes that this award not only transforms their lives but also inspires them to give back to their communities and contribute meaningfully to society.
With their journey at Santa Clara University set to begin in September, the two scholars are ready to embrace the challenge, driven by the values of excellence, service, and magis instilled in them by their Jesuit education at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu.
