With intellect, determination, and an unwavering passion for chemistry, Joshua Caleb Gulayan (11-Lux) of Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu has secured a coveted spot in the National Finals of the 24th Philippine National Chemistry Olympiad (PNCO). His remarkable achievement follows an outstanding performance in the Region VII qualifier, where he emerged as one of the top five scorers among 40 student competitors from 16 public and private high schools.
Gulayan, alongside his dedicated teammates Mateo Buenconsejo (11-Pax) and Phidar Kou (11-Pax), competed in the PNCO Region VII Elimination Round held on February 8, 2025, at the University of San Carlos – Talamban Campus. Their journey was guided by their committed coach, Mr. Clifford Jay Cairo, whose mentorship played a crucial role in their preparation and success.
The PNCO, organized by the Philippine Federation of Chemical Societies, Inc. (PFCS), is the nation’s premier high school chemistry competition, designed to identify and nurture the country’s brightest young minds in the field of chemistry. It serves as a stepping stone for students aspiring to compete on the global stage at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) later this year.
Following his stellar performance, Gulayan will now advance to the PNCO National Finals at the University of the Philippines Manila. There, he will face the country’s top chemistry prodigies, vying for a chance to represent the Philippines in the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad, set to take place from July 5-13, 2025, in the United Arab Emirates.
This milestone is a testament to the excellence, perseverance, and Magis spirit that define Ateneo Hearters. The entire Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu community stands in admiration and support of Joshua Gulayan, Mateo Buenconsejo, Phidar Kou, and their coach, Mr. Clifford Jay Cairo. Their hard work and dedication bring immense pride to Region VII and to the Ateneo Hearter family.
As they continue their journey, we wish them success and strength, knowing they carry with them the spirit of greatness and service. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!
