Alvarez, Yvonne Ray C.
Grant-in-Aid Scholar Alumna (2018–2020, 2023–2025)
“The scholarship didn’t just help lessen our financial burden. It gave me hope to know that someone believed I deserved a chance.”
Sometimes, the greatest gift a scholarship offers is not simply the opportunity to study. Sometimes, it is the chance to remain in a place that already feels like home.
For Yvonne Ray Alvarez, that opportunity came when her family’s financial situation placed her future at Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu in uncertainty. As senior high school approached, she had already prepared herself to transfer to another school. It was the practical decision, even if it was not the one she truly wanted.
She loved the Ateneo community and hoped to stay, but she also understood the financial reality her family faced.
“My mom was always very open about our situation,” Yvonne shared. “While our annual income looked enough on paper, there were many financial responsibilities in the background that people didn’t see.”
Although several scholarship programs were available, many based their qualifications solely on annual household income. Her family’s circumstances did not fit neatly into those categories. Fortunately, one of her teachers introduced them to the Grant-in-Aid Scholarship Program, a scholarship that looked beyond numbers and recognized the realities many families quietly carry.
The scholarship covered only half of her tuition.
Yet for Yvonne, that fifty percent meant everything.
“It wasn’t a full ride,” she recalled, “but it really lessened the amount that we had to shoulder.”
More importantly, it gave her the opportunity she had been praying for.
It allowed her to stay.
“I remember begging my parents to let me stay in Ateneo.”
When she later reapplied before entering Grade 11, the waiting period felt endless. Every day, she hoped for good news, wondering whether she would once again be given the chance to remain in the community she had grown to love.
Then came the email response regarding the scholarship grant
“It was a celebration for the whole household,” she remembered.
It was more than financial assistance.
For Yvonne and her family, it meant another chance to continue building a future in a place that had already begun shaping her life.
Unlike many students, Yvonne never saw the scholarship as something that pressured her to excel.
Instead, she saw it as an opportunity worth honoring.
“I always wanted to give it my all,” she shared. “Not because I was afraid of losing the scholarship, but because Ateneo taught me to always strive for more.”
That mindset gradually encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone.
Before senior high school, she admitted that she often played things safe. But during Grades 11 and 12, she challenged herself to become more involved in school life. She joined REAVO, the school’s First Aid Responders, and later became part of the Peer Facilitators Circle (PFC).
What began as simple participation slowly became a journey of leadership.
In Grade 12, Yvonne served as Governor of the Peer Facilitators Circle, leading nearly 80 fellow facilitators while managing her academics and other responsibilities.
Looking back, she laughs when asked how she managed everything.
“I don’t think I balanced it well.”
Although the role brought moments of exhaustion and self-doubt, the guidance and encouragement of her mentors taught her the importance of asking for help, trusting others, and remaining humble and confident.
Through these experiences, Yvonne learned that true leadership is not about carrying every burden alone, but about growing with the support of others.
Today, as a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy student at the University of San Carlos, Yvonne continues to carry the values she first learned at Sacred Heart School–Ateneo de Cebu.
Among all the lessons she continues to treasure, one remains at the center of how she lives today: Magis, the constant desire to become better than yesterday.
She also carries with her Ateneo’s culture of kindness, volunteerism, and genuine concern for others.
“I think Ateneo taught me to be kinder because you never really know what someone else is going through.”
Yvonne now sees the Grant-in-Aid Scholarship as more than financial support. It is hope during uncertainty. It affirmed her potential and gave her the confidence to pursue opportunities she once thought were beyond her reach. Her story shows that the true value of a scholarship lies not only in easing financial burdens but also in giving students the belief and encouragement they need to believe in themselves.
