Beyond Comparison: Learning to Believe in Yourself

Cabarles, Roshelene R.
Grant-in-Aid Scholar Alumna (2019–2023)

“Don’t underestimate your capabilities. Just work hard and believe in yourself.”

There are moments when we look at the people around us and quietly wonder, Am I doing enough? Am I good enough? Am I capable enough?

For Roshelene R. Cabarles, these questions were once part of her own story.

Growing up, she never imagined herself becoming the kind of person whose achievements would one day be recognized by others. She sometimes looked at accomplished people and thought that perhaps greatness was something meant for others, not for her.

But life slowly taught her otherwise.

Now a third-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at Cebu Normal University (CNU), Roshelene is learning that success is not always about being the best. Sometimes, it is simply about having the courage to continue when the journey becomes difficult.

Her journey began at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu, where she was given the opportunity to grow academically, personally, and spiritually. The school’s supportive environment helped her develop the confidence and determination she needed to pursue her aspirations.

“Looking back, Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu was a place that was patient with me, where I was given the space to learn, make mistakes, and become more confident in myself.”

With the foundation she gained at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu, Roshelene was able to enter Cebu Normal University, her dream college, where she continues to work toward becoming a nurse.

College, however, brought challenges she had not anticipated.

“College hasn’t been as kind as I expected.”

Amid the pressure, fear, and uncertainty, she persevered and earned a place among the Dean’s Listers during her first year at CNU. Through these experiences, she learned that success is not defined solely by achievements. Sometimes, simply enduring difficult seasons and choosing to move forward is already an accomplishment.

Her faith, deeply nurtured during her years at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu, became an anchor during challenging times.

“If it weren’t for their constant reminder, I wouldn’t have known where to turn to.”

She also learned to stop comparing herself with others and to focus instead on her own growth and potential.

“You shouldn’t compare yourself to others.”

Today, as she continues her nursing education, Roshelene carries with her the lessons she learned at Sacred Heart School – Ateneo de Cebu: to trust in her abilities, remain grounded in her faith, and persevere despite the challenges ahead.

For Roshelene, the Grant-in-Aid Scholarship meant more than financial assistance. It gave her the opportunity to continue her education, pursue her dream of studying at CNU, and discover what she is capable of achieving.

“You may think that it’s just donating, but what you’re doing right now is really giving people hope for the future.”

She is grateful to the alumni donors and benefactors whose generosity helped make her educational journey possible and gave her the opportunity to build a future filled with hope.

Her message to fellow scholars is simple:

“Don’t underestimate your capabilities. Don’t compare yourself to others. Just work hard and believe in yourself.”
